There is a series of phrases people use in the aftermath of trauma, because for some reason, people feel the need to say something “soothing” — except these phrases aren’t soothing, in fact, they make grief worse.

Here is a few of those phrases:

  • “Time heals all wounds.”
  • “There’s a purpose in this…”
  • “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle…
  • And the phrase Tim Lynch brings up in this video: “Everything happens for a reason.”

Here’s a recommendation: Hug them… hard… squeeze them… let them feel how much you care. Then tell they that you are there for them 24/7, and then hug/squeeze them a second time, and tell that you love them. Done.

DO NOT MAKE SOMEONE’S GRIEF WORSE BY SAYING SOMETHING DUMB, BECAUSE YOU JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY. AND, IN YOUR NERVOUSNESS, YOU REPEAT SOMETHING YOU HEARD YOUR PARENTS SAY IN A SIMILAR SITUATION. DON’T DO THAT.
