REEL 39: Living with COURAGE after a traumatic event is an essential part of living a great life

Not faking it… talking about it… staying close to your besties… creating intimacy… are all difficult things to do; and the common element in each of those steps that help us live great lives after a traumatic event is COURAGE.

And so you know, COURAGE is not the absence of fear, because you’re gonna be scared as you take each of those steps. COURAGE is putting your fear aside and doing what is best for you and the people who love you… so you can live a GREAT life.

We’ll talk about it.

Reel 38: The increased importance of INTIMACY in our lives after a traumatic event.

Once you stop faking it… once you begin to talk about your traumatic experiences with those closest to you… your tribe… what you’re really doing is creating intimacy in your life.

If human beings are to live great lives, intimacy will be a part of their life… after traumatic experiences, we crave intimacy… but we run from it.

We’ll talk about it.

REEL 37, Part 3: We’ve gotta talk about our traumatic experiences & STAY CONNECTED TO OUR TRIBE

In Part 3 of the 8th Commandment, we’ll talk about staying connected to our “tribe” — to our besties and why that is sooooo important as we struggle in the aftermath of traumatic experiences.
Remember, isolation will kill you… And your “tribe” is the mechanism that you can use to help yourself and, oftentimes, to help a tribal member also.
Who is in your “tribe”? When was the last time you spoke with that person? You need to tend to your tribe because you’re gonna need them in your life as you walk this path from trauma to joy.
Oh, by the way… they’re gonna need you too.
We’ll talk about all of that.

REEL 37, Part 1: We’ve gotta talk about our traumatic experiences & stay connected to our tribe

After we stop faking our mental fitness, a door will naturally open to a conversation we need to have.
But why do we need to talk about our traumatic experiences?
And… how do we talk about such intimate subject? We’re all afraid that whoever we tell will judge us or change their opinion of us.
We’ll talk about all of that.

REEL 36: A few more thoughts on trauma & handling money well… it’s really important

I want to continue the discussion about how important it is to first become financially solid, and then to become financially secure after traumatic experiences.
Learning to live a great life after a traumatic experience or experiences is not easy; doing it with financial stress that simultaneously overwhelms you is almost impossible.
We’ll talk about it.

REEL 35: Learning how to handle money well is a key component to becoming a better version of YOU

One of the aspects of “post-traumatic life” that can make coping extremely difficult is the inability to handle money well.
Financial ignorance, combined with an inability to be financially disciplined, can be a driving force behind destructive behavior… which often occurs when we feel our lives are financially out of control.
We’ll talk about it.

REEL 34: Why Do You Believe So Much in What You Do?

I’ve been out speaking and modifying my studio to record audiobooks… but I’m back!
Today, we’ll talk about:
  1. My new puppy… I’ll introduce you to “Deebo.”
  2. While out speaking, I was asked a question: “Why do you believe in what you do so much? I’ll share my answer with you.

REEL 33: If You Struggle with Trauma, Stop Drinking and/or Doing Drugs

We begin our study of Blueprint #2, “THE BETTER VERSION OF ME” blueprint, with our 5th Commandment: Quit Drinking or Using Drugs If You Struggle With Trauma.

Using alcohol and/or drugs is a very frequent course of action and a numbing mechanism after traumatic events occur in our lives. Alcohol and drugs destroy so many relationships and families… it was something I heard in almost every interview I did, so this is a relatively easy bit of wisdom to share because it’s 100% true.

AND, don’t tell me you can’t do it, millions of people on this planet walk away from alcohol and drugs every year on this planet… if they can do it, you can do it too.

REEL 31: Blueprint #2, The Better Version of You Blueprint

In the aftermath of trauma, it is essential that we change our behavior. Blueprint #2 is about how we actually DO that… how we come better versions of ourselves so that we can live great lives.

REEL 30: Pets and Trauma

After traumatic events occur in our lives, our pets become therapy devices… they provide companionship and intimacy… they need us… and we desperately need to be needed during those difficult days. We’ll talk about that idea in Reel #30.

REEL 28: GOAL #1 — Learn to Coexist with Trauma

If you believe that Commandments One through Four are true and valid… and they are, then they logically lead you to GOAL #1… Learn to COEXIST with trauma.
So many people I meet think there is something wrong with them because they simply can’t “get over” a traumatic event, and when they hear Goal #1, their lives change.
Them: “Mac, when you said that, I laughed!”
Me: “Why? That’s not a very funny statement.”
Them: “It’s the dumbest, smartest thing I’ve ever heard! How could I ever ‘get over’ that?!?!?!? But as silly as it sounds, I’ve been in therapy for a long time, and that’s what I thought was supposed to happen.”
This wisdom creates strength in the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and it is this newfound strength that propels us to live a great life.
Onward.

REEL 27: Commandment #4, Part 2 — Becoming a Better Version of You

As I tried to deal with the damage that the traumatic events of my life had caused to me, I got frustrated because I couldn’t be the person I used to be, no matter how hard I tried… a part of me was different.

People would say to me, “I just wish you could be the way you used to be…” and that was devastating to hear because I was TRYING to be that guy! Then I came to the realization that I could never be that guy again… I WAS different, those events had changed part of me… and then I stumbled into a bit of wisdom from a documentary two friends of mine (Ken & Betty Rodgers) produced about trauma and how it impacts homes, families, and intimate relationships.

I heard a phrase in that documentary that inspired a thought inside my head: I NEED TO BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF ME! I knew I could do that, and that made total sense to me.
